The Résumé Writing Homepage
Finding a job is not easy and it will be even harder if you don't have a good resume. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who really have no idea how to create a resume. That is what this site is about; it is dedicated to helping you to write a better resume. While you do have a fair amount of freedom as to how you write your resume there are a few guidelines that you are going to want to stick to.
The most important thing that you have to learn to do when you are writing your resume is to learn what to include and what not to include. Most people will simply list their previous jobs and the duties that they performed. This is not really the best approach to take. It is important that you learn how to create a resume that is tailored for the job that you are applying for. That means that you need to create a resume that will show why you are best for that particular job.
One thing that you have to keep in mind about your resume is that it is your sales page. When you are looking for a job you are selling a product, yourself. Therefore you need to learn the basics of sales; in particular you want to make sure that your resume explains how hiring you would benefit the employer. This is why you don't want to create a resume that just lists your previous jobs; you want one that clearly explains what you have to offer. The best way to do this is to use numbers. All companies want to increase their profits so your resume should show them how you can help them to do that, by showing how you did it for your previous employer. Don't say things like you increased sales tell them how much you increased sales by.
The layout of your resume is another important thing that you are going to have to learn. You have a few options here depending on what kind of job you are applying for and how much experience you have. If you don't have a lot of experience you are going to want a resume that focuses on your skills rather than your work experience. It is also important to make sure that you keep it short and to the point and that you make it easy to scan.
It is important to keep in mind that your resume is one of the most important documents that you will ever write. It is really quite shocking how many resumes go out with errors in them. While spell check will catch most of the spelling errors it won't catch the grammatical ones or the ones where you use the wrong word. Make sure that you carefully proofread your resume; it is also a good idea to have somebody else proofread it for you.
